On July 1, the 2026 Social Enterprise Day commemorative event was held in Gangnam, Seoul. The event is organized annually to recognize and celebrate the role of social enterprises that work tirelessly to create social value across Korean society.
This year's event was held under the slogan, "Connecting Values Together, Opening Tomorrow Together," and featured a variety of programs. Awards were presented to social enterprises that have made outstanding contributions to creating jobs, building stronger local communities, and generating social value, as well as to organizations and individuals that have supported the growth of South Korea's social enterprise ecosystem. Participants applauded the winners in recognition of their dedication and achievements.
Beyond the official ceremony, the event also included networking sessions and academic forums designed to support the growth and collaboration of social enterprises. One networking session brought together companies that had received the highest rating in the Social Value Index (SVI) assessment, providing an opportunity to share best practices. Academic discussions covered topics including the social and solidarity economy, AI transformation (AX) strategies, and the proposed Framework Act on the Social and Solidarity Economy, which has yet to be passed by the National Assembly. Personally, one of my favorite parts of the event was the social enterprise flea market and startup promotion booths, where visitors could discover social enterprises and learn about the social value they create.

The event was attended by the Minister of Employment and Labor and representatives from organizations supporting South Korea's social enterprise sector. The minister personally visited the venue to congratulate participants and emphasize the importance of social enterprises.
In his remarks, he noted that social enterprises have created new opportunities for people seeking employment, provided compassionate care for vulnerable neighbors, and brought new hope to communities facing decline. He said that if the past years were about planting the seeds of social enterprises, the next step is to grow them into a thriving forest that will help build a warmer and more inclusive South Korea.
He also emphasized that South Korea is facing increasingly complex challenges, including the rapid expansion of AI, climate change, widening inequality, and demographic decline. In this context, he argued that an economy centered on people, human-led technological innovation, inclusive growth, and stronger solidarity and cooperation are more important than ever. According to the minister, social enterprises are at the forefront of putting these values into practice, and the government will remain a reliable partner in supporting their journey toward building an economy that serves people and a society where everyone can grow together.
Like last year's event, the 2026 Social Enterprise Day celebration concluded in a warm and inspiring atmosphere.
In my next article, I will introduce another important event held the very next day—the Cooperatives Day celebration—and share what I observed there.
