The Impact of My Vote on Social Change: Elections and Social Impact

 In South Korea, the 9th Nationwide Local Elections will be held on June 3. As the election approaches, the atmosphere is already heating up as citizens prepare to elect local government leaders and council members.

 

As elections draw near, people vote based on their own beliefs. While each individual has different reasons for choosing a candidate, most voters—especially in local elections—cast their votes with their own communities in mind.

(**In Korea, all citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to vote.)

 

The choice of who receives each vote ultimately shapes the direction of society. Even when candidates aim to solve the same problems, their approaches can differ significantly. In that sense, elections are a critical process that determines the possibilities for social change.

 

Elections Change More Than We Think

 

As in any country, elections play a crucial role in Korean society. They determine policy directions, influence the flow of public funding, and reshape who carries out key initiatives. This is something I deeply experienced during my time working as a journalist.

 

👉Setting policy direction: Elections determine which policies will be prioritized and how they will be implemented.

For those interested in social impact, this includes issues such as climate change, childcare, elderly care, and other pressing social challenges.

 

👉Shaping the flow of funding: Elections influence where government and local budgets are allocated.

While many resources are intended to address social issues, the actual distribution and focus depend heavily on policy direction.

 

👉Determining who implements policy: Elections also decide who will carry out these policies.

Public institutions may take the lead, collaborate with private actors, or leave implementation to the market. In some cases, social impact organizations become key actors—while in others, they do not.

 

Why Local Elections Matter Even More

 

While national elections shape the overall direction of a country, local elections have a more direct impact on people’s daily lives. Naturally, they also affect local businesses and organizations.

 

For example, local elections influence whether budgets are allocated to support social impact organizations in the region. This could include transforming unused public spaces into affordable workspaces for social enterprises, or outsourcing public services—such as community care—to local organizations. These opportunities are closely tied to election outcomes.

 

Local governments can also enact ordinances that enable policies to be implemented more flexibly. In doing so, they may create conditions that allow social impact organizations to operate more actively within their communities. Ultimately, who gets elected can significantly shape the environment in which these organizations function.

 

In other words, elections determine which social problems a community prioritizes, how those problems are addressed, and what role social impact organizations can play in the process.

 

Elections Are Not the End, but the Beginning

 

Elections should not be seen as a one-time event. They are a process through which societies choose how to solve the challenges they face. The vote each person casts can influence many aspects of their daily life.

 

Voting is not just about choosing a person.

It is about choosing a way to solve social problems.

 

And local elections, in particular, are even more important because they determine how the communities we live in will change.
